Mirror Dimly

My bleary eyes open to darkness,
Hands reaching, searching for my phone.
"What time is it?" I'm restless,
Unresolved, unanswered, alone.

But there's a faint glow on the curtains,
The echo of distant birdsong.
The night is dark and too long,
But I know the dawn is as sure as my breath.

The sun will rise in the heavens,
As surely as it always has.
The light I see dimly now will soon warm my back,
For now, I have only a hope, a patient expectation of the one I love.

My hands are empty, but I will soon see his face.
We will meet in the light of day,
In the morning,
Soon.

And so I lay back and close my eyes,
And breathe.

Guide me.
By my longing, let me love you in advance.
Teach me to prepare space for you in my heart.
Then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
