Jesu’ Calls

Simon you Zealot,
You Nationalist bigot
You burn with a passion
To kick out the foreign.
“Come” Jesu’ calls
A look of confusion
Then sudden amazement
“I’ll follow you”

Matthew, you swindler
You trickster and traitor
Your trade is to cheat
Soaked in deceit.
“Come” Jesu’ calls
A look of confusion
Then sudden amazement
“I’ll follow you”

You, young rich ruler
Morally superior
You’re honest and eager
To inherit the Kingdom
“Sell” Jesu’ calls
A look of confusion
Then suddenly downcast
You walk away

Lazarus you friend
Tragically entombed
Your sisters are grieving
“If only Jesu’d come soon!”
“Live” Jesu’ calls
Looks of confusion
Then sudden amazement
You walk into the open

And me?
“Come, sell, live” You call
My look of perplexion
Then sudden amazement
Me? I’ll follow You.
